When one jokes about controversial topics (and I seem to be heading in that direction lately), it’s important to acknowledge that there will be both those who enjoy it and those who detest it!
It is fair game. That is the nature of such content.
A controversial topic would always split the room. IMO that is what comedy should achieve - split the room! People should strongly agree or disagree with an idea. They should love or hate it. Then you know your idea matters!
Someone not liking a joke is not the same as someone digging some out-of-context meaning out of it and then outraging. The former is respectfully accepted, even appreciated, as feedback. The latter though….ughh!
Mostly, I ignore the trolls. Thankfully, the happy fan messages far outnumber the trolls! I guess one cannot get too affected by messages - good or bad. A negative reaction to a joke is similar to a fan saying, ‘You are the best’. Both are exaggerated statements. One must be mature enough to handle both praise and criticism!
But once in a while, a dumb comment seeps through this maturity! (and then at the end of that interaction, you kick yourself for engaging, or you write a blog like this one!).
THE RANT
I have a weakness (I have many, but this I’m not willing to fix): I detest people who lack a sense of humour or perceive stand-up comedy as some TED talk where every word must be taken literally!
For god’s sake, stop analysing jokes! Do not project your sad, miserable, outrage-filled existence onto something that is intended to make people laugh!
Do not comment. Do not share your views. Shut up and walk away! Comedy is not for you. Watch something else. If you come across a joke online, immediately swipe and move on. It was not written for someone like you. The joke doesn’t need you.
You are never going to buy a ticket to a comedy show. You are not even welcome to this party! Frankly, I can’t imagine you to be the life of any party in real life also!
Nobody here is seeking your out-of-context opinion. People who write comedy and those who understand that these are just jokes are happy people. They are smart people, much smarter than you would ever be. They don’t need you. Probably nobody needs you in real life, too.
OK, Rant Over. Blood pressure normalised. Thank you for reading. What would I do without you? Muaahh!
Back to writing jokes!
A joke might provoke
It might not be approved by the woke townfolks.
But if we stop joking, society will become boringly broke
So we keep laughing till we choke
Thank you Sir for all the jokes !
